Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV)

Key Information

The Visitor Visa (TRV) lets foreign nationals legally enter Canada for tourism, family visits, or short business activities. Whether you’re exploring Canada’s cities and landscapes or reuniting with loved ones, the TRV provides the authorization you need for a temporary stay.

Eligibility & Documents

To qualify, applicants must show strong ties to their home country, a clear purpose of travel, and enough funds to cover the trip without working or relying on public support. Typical supporting documents include an invitation letter from a Canadian host (if applicable), a travel itinerary, recent bank statements/payslips, and proof of employment or family obligations at home.

Family Visits & Sponsorship Context

The TRV is often used by family members of temporary residents, permanent residents, or citizens who wish to visit for family reunification. While a TRV does not permit work or long-term residence, some spouses/partners of Canadians or permanent residents use it to remain close to loved ones during inland sponsorship processing.

Validity & Stay

TRVs are commonly issued for up to 10 years or until the passport expires (whichever comes first). Each entry usually allows a stay of up to 6 months. If plans change or a longer stay is needed, extensions may be possible—request before status expires.
