Business/Tourism Visa (B-1/B-2)

Key Information

The B-1/B-2 visa is the United States’ standard visitor route for short, temporary trips—B-1 for business (meetings, conferences, contract discussions) and B-2 for tourism or family visits (holidays, graduations, medical treatment, short recreational courses). It does not permit employment or full-time study.

Eligibility

To qualify, applicants need to demonstrate that the trip is genuinely temporary, that they’ll return home after the visit, and that they can fund travel, accommodation, and daily expenses without working in the U.S.

Length of stay & validity

Most entries are admitted for up to six months. Depending on nationality, a visa can be issued for multiple years with multiple entries; each stay remains temporary.

How to apply

Applying involves completing the DS-160, paying the visa fee, enrolling biometrics, and attending a consular interview where your purpose, ties, and finances are reviewed.

What strengthens your application

Strong applications tell a clear, consistent story—why you’re going, how you’ll support yourself, where you’ll stay, and what anchors you to your home country. Invites and financial evidence can help, but your own credibility and ties are most important.
