Dependent Visa (F-2)
Key Information
The F-2 visa lets the spouse and unmarried children under 21 of an F-1 student live in the United States for the duration of the F-1’s program. F-2 is a dependent status, so your stay—and any travel or extensions—are tied to the F-1’s continued, lawful enrollment.
What F-2s can and cannot do
F-2s cannot work in the U.S. F-2 spouses may study part-time (full-time typically requires F-1), while F-2 children may study full-time in K–12. When a child turns 21, they must change status to remain in the U.S.
Applying from outside the U.S.
To obtain an F-2 visa abroad, you’ll need an F-2 Form I-20 issued by the school, a DS-160 and consular interview, and proof of relationship and finances; there’s no separate SEVIS fee.
